My Approach

Prof. Nehrer is a specialist in orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery responsible for diseases of the musculoskeletal system and an internationally recognised expert in the surgical treatment of cartilage defects and osteoarthritis, as well as a distinguished scientist in the field of regenerative medicine.

As a joint surgeon, his specialisation lies in both surgical and conservative treatment of joint problems. Surgically, the focus ranges from arthroscopy and joint-preserving cartilage surgery through to joint replacement with partial or total prostheses, while conservative therapy options are fully explored to avoid unnecessary operations. In the field of regenerative medicine, autologous blood products such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Autologous Conditioned Plasma (ACP) as well as hyaluronic acid products are used and researched.

Prof. Nehrer trained at the Vienna University Clinic, where he achieved his habilitation in 1999 following a two-year research stay at Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2006, he was appointed Professor of Tissue Engineering at Danube University Krems, where he has since led the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medicine in 2013. Since 2006, he has treated patients surgically at the University Hospital Krems. In February 2019, he was awarded the Grand Silver Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria by Federal President Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen.
